Choose Marshall Welcomes New Chamber Member Emerald Hills Golf Course & Tavern

June 21, 2022

The Marshall Area Economic Development Alliance (MAEDA)/Choose Marshall held a New Chamber Member Ribbon Cutting to welcome Emerald Hills Golf Course & Tavern.  Formerly known as Alwyn Downs, the property was purchased by Norfolk Homes of Ann Arbor in 2020.   Over the past two years both the golf course and clubhouse have undergone a complete renovation and upgrade.

Joel Tompkins, Emerald Hills General Manager, stated, “Last year was a rebuilding year, and we have now rebranded ourselves and are a new and improved version.  Not only is the 18-hole golf course in great playing condition, but the tavern now offers a full bar and has a limited menu of appetizers, and burgers and wraps, served with tasty French fries.”  The current menu will be undergoing an expansion soon with thoughts of adding a signature item or two and paying homage to the previous restaurant, Laverne and Shirley’s.”  Other future plans include adding sunshades on the deck and an outdoor grill area where customers can build their own burger.  Tompkins added, “If you purchase a new Norfolk home in an Emerald Hills community, we will offer home buyers a one-year golf membership, 10% off discount on food and pro shop merchandise, and free food delivery.”

The indoor tavern seats 70 and the outdoor space has seating for 60 on the newly renovated lower and second story decks.  Tompkins commented, “Come enjoy food and beverage on the upstairs deck with a beautiful view of the golf course and Marshall.”  The Tavern is becoming known for their lunchtime carryout and delivery (5-mile radius).  They also offer off-site catering and custom menus are available.  This summer come enjoy live music twice a week.   Local favorite, Crispin Bocanegra, plays outdoors every Tuesday evening from 6-9pm and on Friday night enjoy Karaoke and DJ entertainment.  The Tavern also offers the perfect space for a variety of different rental occasions.  Tompkins added, “We have several upcoming class reunions, wedding showers and family reunions on the schedule.  The Tavern will remain open year-round so book your Holiday Party today. “

Matt Coulson, Emerald Hills Golf Pro, is very enthusiastic about the improved play on the 18-hole course this year. “Our grounds crew has been hard at work making the greens the best they have played in at least 10 years. We are also completely renovating each of the sand traps on the course with Pro-Angle crushed quartz, which is the highest quality sand you can possibly use for bunkers.  Over the last two years, Joel and I have been implementing an intensive course improvement plan to bring Emerald Hills Golf Course up to par and to be the best playing course at the best price in the area.”   He added, “The golf course also has a newly opened 75-yard chipping range.  In addition to our adult golf leagues, we just started our Jr. Golf League with 22 kids (ages 10-17).   We had an excellent response, and we are so pleased to have so many kids participate this summer.  If you are interested in a Fall golf league or leagues for 2023, let us know today.”

Tompkins is excited to be a part of something new and improved in Marshall.  “The City of Marshall has been very good to work with, and we want to be a part of Marshall’s growth by adding a quality and friendly community golf course where you can go to play a round of golf, and a tavern where you will get a great meal and a cold beverage.”
